English
After listening to Cal Newport's podcast for the first time in a while, I was surprised to find that I understood quite a bit of what Cal was talking about.
I don't think I understood the concepts he was talking about itself, but I understood what was being talked about.
I also read and understood an interview in English with Utada Hikaru, which was featured in blogger Nejimaki-san's newsletter.
There were some words I didn't know, but I could make analogies.
It was a wonderful interview.
I felt that Utada-san* is an honest and sincere person.
I started reading it on the train on the way home and read it all the way through after I got home and finished my meal.
I think people in Japan should read this using a translation service.
I don't read many English books, but how did I come to understand them?
I am sure it is thanks to my English conversation tutor.
I didn't study much, but my tutor was patient with me.
In terms of hours, that's about 4,500 hours.
Even if it was only 30 minutes a week, I think it worked because it lasted so long.
* San is added after someone's name to show respect and politeness in Japanese.
